Substance Abuse Professional

What is a Substance Abuse Professional?

The Substance Abuse Professional (SAP) is a person who evaluates employees who have violated a DOT drug and alcohol program regulation and makes recommendations concerning education, treatment, follow-up testing, and aftercare.

As a SAP, I represent the major decision point (and in some cases the only decision point) an employer may have in choosing whether or not to place an employee behind the steering wheel of a school bus, in the cockpit of a plane, at the helm of an oil tanker, at the throttle of a train, in the engineer compartment of a subway car, or at the emergency control valves of a natural gas pipeline.

As a SAP, I am an advocate for neither the employer nor the employee. My function is to protect the public interest in safety by professionally evaluating the employee and recommending appropriate education and/or treatment, follow-up tests, and aftercare.

How do I start?

Call and make an appointment.  At our first visit, I will discuss the process, do an assessment, and provide you with my recommendations.  The process is usually done in 1 day and may take about 2 hours, although rarely, it may be necessary for you to return for another visit to complete the assessment.

Here is a link that will provide a first-hand account of the process (each case is unique, however, the process is the same)  https://www.truckinginfo.com/345858/testing-positive-for-marijuana-one-drivers-story  Currently assessments will be done via live audio and video connection.

Please check out the following links for additional information:

https://clearinghouse.fmcsa.dot.gov/FAQ/Topics/CDL-Drivers,Return-to-Duty   This site will provide an answer to most of your questions.  If you still have questions, please contact me.

What happens next?

After the assessment, you will receive details on the necessary services to complete before returning to a sensitive employment position. This may include:

  • Education and/or Treatment: The duration will depend on assessment results and input from all collateral sources.
  • Follow-up Plan: After completing the treatment, a tailored follow-up plan will be presented to you and your employer.

Decision on Return to Duty:

  • Your employer will decide if you can return to duty.
  • You and your employer will determine who pays for the drug screens included in your follow-up plan.
